DJ Name: DJ Sol
Hometown: Santa Monica / Malibu, CA
Trademark saying or philosophy toward music/life: Keep
it real!
Describe kind of music do you spin: Funky Breakbeat, House,
and Hip Hop.
Discography (including albums, tracks/contributions to
compilations, mixtapes/CDs): I'm currently working on
some remixes and a few tracks of my own, but haven't released
any to date. I have however put out a few mixed CD's
over the years, but they are definitely few and far between. They
include: Animals (1998), Solfuric (1999), Social Eyes (2000),
Hip Hop Junkie Volumes 1 & 2 (1999 & 2001), Live
at Groovetech (2000), Deep Concentration 101 (2002), Mi Casa (2003),
Are You A Freak? (2004) and Keep It Movin' (Love Parade Mix) (2004).
The first record you ever bought: Oh no,
this will definitely date me but it was either Pink Floyd's
"Dark Side Of The Moon" or Led Zeppelin's "Houses
Of The Holy"... and yes, I bought them when they just came
out in 1973! I'm definitely oldschool.
Most influential record(s) in your life: The two I just
mentioned are definitely in there, but since I'm into so many
different genres, I'll give you some of my favorite artists: New
Order, Beastie Boys, Black Flag, TSOL, The Clash, Bob Marley,
Tribe Called Quest, Rolling Stones, James Brown, Sublime &
Grand Master Flash just to name a few.
When/where did you first DJ? Cal's Union Street Lounge,
1995.
What made you want to be a DJ? Nothing in particular, I
just think I was destined to do this. Ever since I was like 5
years old I was fascinated by music and records. I had a record
player as a kid and would pretend I was a radio DJ for fun. In
the very early 80's me and my friends would go to the local record
store and buy the newest 12 singles by Grand Master Flash,
Malcolm McLaren, The Crash Crew, The Fearless Four, Afrika Bambaataa,
etc. which we would make our own mixtapes from. I still have those
records and have been collecting 12 " singles ever since.
I started DJ'ing house parties in the late 80's and the rest is
history.
What is your most memorable performance of your DJ career?
Playing after Mark Farina at the SF Is Burning party
at The Albion in South Beach Miami. Also, NYE 2000 Great American
Music Hall ˆ SF, NYE 2002 on the beach in Fiji, Love Parade
2004 and December 2004 at the Endup.
Do you play CDs as well as vinyl? Sometimes.
Most annoying thing that you have experienced from clubbers:
Requesting bad music, spilling drinks and messing with the equipment.
Most suprisingly nice thing that you have had happen from club
goers: Telling me that they really love the music I'm playing,
and then not trying to request something.
In your opinion who is the best DJ of all time? Maybe Danny
Tenaglia.
Who in your opinion are the Bay Area's Top Five DJs?
So many good ones but, Charlotte The Baroness, DJ Seven, Mancub,
M3 and me! of course.
