DJ Name: DJ Seven
Hometown: San Francisco
Trademark saying or philosophy: If your
heart is in it, people will feel this on the dancefloor. Playing
music is about bringing people together to celebrate differences,
similarities and the human spirit. Dance is a freedom of expression
that combines rhythm with style and coordination. It is one of
the oldest human expressions...how long has man and woman been
dancing to the drum around the fire?
How would you describe the music you spin?
House, breaks, electro, hip hop, downtempo, broken beat, drum
and bass, jazz, reggae, rock..I love it all. There is good music
and there is music that is not as good. I play music that I like
and I also pay attention to the music that others like. All DJs
are critics..some are just better critics than others...
Why the name 'DJ Seven'? My buddy
DJ Sol came up with the name in the mid-90s while playing
records at his apartment. He took my first initial from 'Sean'
and coupled it with my last name 'Evans' to come up with 'Sevans'
which became 'Seven' and then I got him back and named him 'Sol'
so we could do gigs as 'Seven and Sol' which sounds more
like a drink than a DJ duo. The number seven is also a magical
and mystical number...let's see...we have the seven seas, the
seven chakras, the seven wonders of the world, seven is the most
common dice roll with a pair of dice, the seven notes of the musical
scale..and the list goes on! Seven is lucky...it could just be
your number!
Discography: I have put out about seven or eight mix
CDs over the past four or five years...my personal favorites include:
'House is a Tempo', 'Poolchairs and Love Affairs', 'Miami Decompression',
'Ghosts of the Fillmore', 'Wisdom Through Hedonism I and II' (for
Delicious Karma), 'Naughty Kit Kat', '88', 'Love In It' and
'Make the Magic Happen'....
First record you ever bought: Thomas
Dolby's 'The Golden Age of Wireless' back in the 80s
when I was in Middle School.
Most influential record(s) in your life:
Orbital Green Album and DJ Shadow 'Entroducing'
When did you first DJ? 1989
Will you always be a DJ do you think?
Yes, once a DJ always a DJ...but you have to believe in yourself
and never give up DJing...
What is your most memorable performance of your DJ career?
2002 Miami WMC at the Albion Hotel for SF By Definition
playing with Garth, M3, Gavin Hardkiss, the Baroness and
others... and the All-Cal Ski Trip (1992) at Steamboat
Springs playing for 1000 people at the mid-mountain lodge in December.
It was below zero outside but the lodge was hot and sweaty
and college kids were getting down to hip hop, rock, house
and whatever I threw on!
Do you play CDs as well as vinyl? Yes,
sometimes CDs but mostly vinyl still...
In your opinion, who is the best DJ of all time?
Francois K, Danny Tenaglia, Sander Kleinenberg, Jeno..tied...
Who in your opinion are the Bay Area's Top Five DJs?
Jeno, Charlotte the Baroness, DJ Sol, Laird and Greg
Eversoul.
Does San Francisco cultivate a positive environement for DJs?
San Francisco is a very positive DJ enviroment but I've seen the
same energy in other cities too...Seattle, San Diego and Denver
to name a few.. SF is blessed by having a large population (in
the Bay Area) and a relatively high number of people into the
dance music. We've got it going on for sure!
Most annoying thing that you have experienced from clubbers:
People who spill drinks on you (because they are too drunk) or
people who can't stop requesting their favorite tune and won't
leave you alone until you play it. Anyone who grabs the equipment
while you're playing..no respect!
Most suprisingly nice thing that you have had happen from
club goers: Smiles, hugs, cheers, compliments,
free drinks...they all add up to a good time. Basically when people
show their appreciation.
All time top five records: So difficult
to nail down..how about my top five favorite rock artists of all
time: The Police, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, U2 and Led
Zeppelin. Four British bands and an Irish one..not sure why
the Americans didn't make it in my top 5? Go figure.
