DJ Name: I go by 4AM, i used to go by Superfly (that album
changed my life when i was 16) but then Dr Dre brought out a rapper
named Sooperfly so i thought i should change up... but 4AM is
cool, it's the most surreal hour of the day, the darkest hour
before dawn, the time of the season, four shades past midnight,
it's the latest you can get before morning... word
Hometown: I'm from the armpit of california... fresno...
raisin capitol... carjack capitol, movie rental capitol, worst
air quality capitol, land of fast food and obesity... bitter winters
and hellish summers... made me who i am, i had nothing to do with
the rash of meth labs.
Trademark saying or philosophy toward your music/life: I've
burned every bridge possible to insure that if i don't make it
in the music biz i will die broken and alone. music is my life
so i really hope to make my expression my way of living... in
the meantime i'm selling other peoples philosiphies and libidos...
What and where do you spin? I play hip-hop and other thangs
at Element Lounge (geary & van ness) every tuesday, at Alpha
Lounge (Geary and 3rd) every thursday and let out the skeletons
from my closet on saturdays at the Hush Hush (14th & Guererro)
that party is hella cheesefest, it's named after a Foreigner song,
it's a good thing i have bad taste in music. i also just started
a new collective with fellow soul enthusiests the Whooligan, Keelay
and Stanley Sweetheart called the Young Soul Rebels...we're trying
to do a monthly at the Madrone Lounge on Divisidero, the next
one is on sunday the 13th (all soul 1959-1989).

When/where did you first DJ? in '95,
i caught a break spinning on an underground station in an abandoned
bank vault in downtown fresno (it was the first place i had ever
seen cockroach families)
What made you want to be a DJ? I've always had a record
obsession, since i was 2, maybe the lack of music programs in
public schools had something to do with it, the turntable is the
one instrument all peeps can play, since hip-hop was the voice
and movement of my generation all of my heroes were in hip hop,
terminator x, dj scratch, kid capri, red alert, ritchie rich...holy
shit...then the scratch piklz showed up and blew my fucking head,
i also remember that dude dj david that took a couple of the early
dmc's, that guy was insane, dj pam scratching with her tits was
pretty amazing too...oh, can't forget dj aladin
What is the most memorable performance of your DJ career?
When I played with dj centipede at a club in Barcelona called
fone.fone, we were on a month long tour of europe that was pretty
much an excersise in poverty and homelessness (it was pretty awesome
regaurdless) rocking that club was the ray of sunshine our egos
needed, we had it packed from front to back...the first show i
played in sf was pretty memorable too...me and will from octavius
opened up for anticon and sage francis at rico's loft, quite the
eye opener.
