BAY AREA DJ DOT ORG NEWS
by Victor Vinyl
A lot of Bay Area DJs will be spinning at the release party for
the new HipHopSlam/Amoeba Music co-release Amoeba
Music Compilation Vol. V at Club Six in San
Francisco on Friday, February 11th. DJs spinning both upstairs
and downstairs at the Sixth and Market Streets club will include
DJ Platurn, Joe Quixx, Big Ant, 4AM, and Mike Bee.
It is only $5 to get in but if you sport some Amoeba
gear such as an Amoeba T-shirt or even an Amoeba slipmat worn
on your head.......
DJ PJ, the fictional female DJ created by pulp fiction
author Cathy Yardley, is the central character in the SoCal
writer's brand new book Couch World (RedDressInk, 2005 ). The book is a tale
about a proud but broke San Francisco DJ who has records but has
no home and barely scrapes by on club gigs as she crashes on various
friend's couches. Her big break is about to unfold, she believes,
when a local weekly writes up the struggling DJ...but not in the
way she thinks the writer will do so. Before writing the book
Yardley reportedly spent time closely observing the SF club scene
and in the opening pages gives acknowledgment to several sources
including San Francisco's DJ Amber and also Sister SF.
"Couch World" may be of interest to some local DJs for
its references to familiar things like the (defunct) DV8
or the SF Weekly and even Final Scratch and
the whole SF club/DJ scene. However they will have to overlook
the occasional typo such as referring to drum-and-bass
as "bass-and-drum"....
NiteVibe.com, one
of the most consistently informative online sources for news on
Bay Area DJs and the nite spots they spin at, celebrated their
annual San Francisco DJ DreamTeam readers poll at
Ruby Skye on February 3rd. Spinning were all but one of this
year's Top Ten San Francisco DJ DreamTeam: Miguel Migs, Mark
Farina, Lorin, M3, Jeno, Laird, Ellen Ferrato, Smoove, Jondi &
Spesh, and Kaskade (who was out of town)...
Foundation joins KitKat and Strawberry
as the latest regular club to exit the EndUp in recent
weeks. Foundation, the popular deep-house music monthly
with Miguel Migs and Julius Papp, will reportedly
be moving the party to club Mighty. Moulton Studios
were in the house for the final EndUp nite (with DJs Migs, Papp,
and Jay-J) taping for an upcoming film project titled Ten
One Hundred. Another change at the EndUp's schedule is the
addition of a second Reggae Gold (Rolo, Polo,
Toks etc.) night each month due to its ever-growing popularity.
Reggae fans will recall that it was the EndUp where the legendary
Club Dread (before moving to Studio Z) had
its peak years before an unfortunate random act of violence caused
its exit there.....
DJs Vinroc, Derrick D, MCD, Chicken Scratch, Big Talka,
and Zico spin hip-hop, reggae, and soul at Sound
Bridge, Feb. 18th at Hide (7th & Folsom) and
every third Friday of each month.....
The third and latest issue of Club Seen - the San
Francsico club & DJ themed magazine has just hit the streets.
Look for it at various Bay Area clubs and record stores including
Amoeba. The latest cover of this recommended free glossy zine
features DJs M3, Queen Agnes B, and Michael Anthony.
Look for more on Club Seen,
with some insights from founder/publisher Bobby K, in the
next NEWS update on this site.....
Also scheduled to be featured here in an upcoming Bay
Area DJ Profile is longtime SF DJ David Harness
who has just released a new CD titled Heartbeat.
Harness along with fellow legendary Bay Area house DJ, Pete
Avila will celebrate the new release at Thrive (Paradise
Lounge, 1501 Folsom) on Feb. 17th.....Other new Bay Area DJ releases
include Romanowski's Party In My Pants and
club/radio DJ Backside
who just dropped the 34 track Fall Back Mixtape Vol. 1.....
The Bay Area's hottest new hip-hop DJ - Fairfield's DJ Hyphy
has just released the ultimate mix-CD of what is being referred
to as "the new Bay sound" (see recent MTV News, East
Bay Express and San Jose Mercury News stories). DJ
Hyphy: The New Bay Classics – 2005 Mix Vol. 1
features hits from the likes of the Federation and Frontline
plus several unreleased exclusive tracks. It is available at select
retail and online outlets including HipHopSlam.com's
Shop.....
Veteran Bay Area DJ Zen (Solesides/Quannum/KALX/KDVS)
-better known as journalist Jeff Chang (Bay Guardian,
URB, Spin, etc) has penned the instant classic hip-hop
history book Can't Stop Won't Stop (St. Martins Press,
2005). It's well worth buying or (if you are broke like most of
us) reading at your local library or book store......
Tomas, DJ and
editor of XLR8R magazine, is one of the newly added Bay
Area DJ Profiles to this site. Others include the aforementioned
DJ Backside
and DJ Sol who
recently proved the importance of DJs handing out free mix CDs
in clubs coz you never know what it might lead to. In DJ Sol's
case one of the CDs he passed out at SF clubs in December somehow
made its way into the hands of a promoter in Hawaii who flew the
San Francisco DJ out to Hawaii in January for a few gigs based
soley on how impressed he was with the DJ's mix CD.
